Before that, temperatures had been stable or declining for about 40 years. How will we cope with the changes weve already set into motion? Researcher Bill Fraser has tracked the decline of the Adà ©lie penguins on Antarctica, where their numbers have fallen from 32,000 breeding pairs to 11,000 in 30 years. 3. Sea level rise became faster over the last century. 4. Some butterflies, foxes, and alpine plants have moved farther north or to higher, cooler areas. 5. Precipitation (rain and snowfall) has increased across the globe, on average. 6. Spruce bark beetles have boomed in Alaska thanks to 20 years of warm summers. The insects have chewed up 4 million acres of spruce trees. C. Other effects could happen later this century, if warming continues. 1. Sea levels are expected to rise between 7 and 23 inches (18 and 59 centimeters) by the end of the century, and continued melting at the poles could add between 4 and 8 inches (10 to 20 centimeters). 2. Floods and droughts will become more common. Rainfall in Ethiopia, where droughts are already common, could decline by 10 percent over the next 50 years. (Transition: So now, we know about global warming effects, lets see our future†¦and how we can fix it!?) III. Predicted Effects and Impacts of Global Warming. A. Future effects about global warming. 1. Increased spread of infectious diseases: an increase in the number of people exposed to vector borne diseases (e.g. cholera) and an increase in heat stress mortality. 2. Degraded water quality: Projected climate change will tend to degrade water quality through higher water temperatures and increased pollutant load from runoff and overflows of waste facilities. 3. More frequent and more intense heat waves, droughts, and tropical cyclones. B. Some basic predictions of global warming. 1. Global mean temperature should increase by between 1.4 and 5.8 C (2.5 to 10 F). 2. The sea level should rise by between 9 and 88 cm (3.5 to 35). Kidney Stones The medical term for kidney stones is Nephrolithiasis or Renal Calculi. A kidney stone is a solid lump that can be as small as a grain of sand and as large as a golf ball made up of crystals that separate from urine and build up on the inner surfaces of the kidney. A kidney stone that does not pass on out can block the urinary tract. This blockage will probably cause a lot of pain. If medical attention is not received to identify the cause of the pain and remove the blockage, the pain is likely to go away over a few days. This usually will cause the sufferer to think that the problem is over with but it actually has not. The problem that had actually happened was that the kidney that had been blocked has now shut down. This kidney, if left untreated for just a few days, can lead to a permanent loss of the kidney.      There are many potential causes of a kidney stone. They are formed from any of the following, or even two of the following:  ·Ã‚     a family genetic predisposition to form stone  ·Ã‚     to local water or soil conditions  ·Ã‚     intake of excess uric acid, certain medications, Vitamin C, or Vitamin D  ·Ã‚     a diet of fruits and vegetables high in oxalate  ·Ã‚     long term dehydration and its resulting concentration of urine  ·Ã‚     urinary infection  ·Ã‚     living in an area where high temperatures cause sweating and loss of fluids  ·Ã‚     possibly, just leading a low physical activity lifestyle Doctors and other physicians say that the best two ways to prevent this disease from happening is to keep yourself well hydrated at all times. In recent years employee orientation programs have taken on a position of importance in most successful organizations. All of the information in this process will facilitate the orientation of new employees. Most employers provide orientation programs for new hires and training programs for both current and new employees. These programs have different purposes. Orientation programs typically deal with the assimilation of employees into new working environments while training programs generally concern “hands on†job or functional skills development The orientation for new employees will provide the appropriate information regarding their job andThe topics addressed include should include: program evaluation, testing, certificates of completion, training records, equal opportunity for training, hours worked, harassment and discrimination training, safety training, repayment of training expenses. All new employees should complete a new employment orientation program that is designed to assist them in adjusting to their jobs and work environment and to instill a positive work attitude and motivation at the onset. A thoughtful new employee orientation program can reduce turnover and save an organization thousands of dollars. One reason people change jobs is because they never feel welcome or part of the organization they join. The most important principle to convey during an orientation is your commitment to continuous improvement and continual learning. That way, new employees become comfortable with asking questions to obtain the information they need to learn, problem solve and make decisions. Preparing a checklist of subjects, which should be reviewed with each new employee, is imperative, as well as setting aside the appropriate amount of time for this to be done(Legge 2005). Time should be devoted to this new employee without interruptions to convey to the new person that they are the most important item on the agenda at the moment. A New Employee Orientation Checklist is crucial to expedite the orientation process a make it as more productive one and the check list should include: Personnel file contents, verification of any licenses or certifications required on this person’s job, Complete necessary paperwork, INS Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, Employment agreement if you use them, Receipt for their copy of your employee handbook, W-4 Form for payroll withholding. Personal data sheet so you will have the information necessary on emergency contacts, home address and telephone number, social security number. Explaining the company’s practice, policies and procedures to the new employees is important since it will clarify what benefits is the employee entitle to, as well as what will be expected from the employee such as: hours of work and attendance/tardiness policy, payroll periods, when paychecks are delivered and when first check will arrive, rates of pay, overtime rules, training or introductory employment period, employee benefits for which they are or may become eligible: medical insurance, sick leave, vacation, personal leave, jury duty, holidays, pension programs, savings programs and/or stock plans, life, disability and accident insurance, employee activities, other benefits you offer and how much the employer will pay for each. advancement or promotion opportunities and procedures and employee suggestion plan. During orientation new employees should have the opportunity to know the corporate culture, and understanding of “how we do things around here.†(Legge 2005)This is the best time for to create the attitude expected from workers to have in performing their jobs, setting the tone for the remainder of their employment with the company, making it positive to stress the things which are truly important the organization, and, giving the employee opportunity to ask questions along the way. A well-thought-out orientation process takes energy, time and commitment; however it usually pays off for the individual employee, the department, and the organization. An effective orientation program – or the lack of one – will make a significant difference in how quickly a new employee becomes productive and has other long-term impacts for your organization. The end of the first day, the end of the first week, the end of each day in your employment, is just as important as the beginning. A Poetry Comparison of Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two Beautiful People in a Mercedes and Nothings Changed The poem Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two Beautiful People in a Mercedes has been chosen to be compared with Nothings Changed. Nothings Changed is an autobiographical poem. Tatamkhulu Afrika has written this poem on the system of apartheid, which kept white and black South Africans segregated. He writes that, despite the changing political situation, there are still huge inequalities between blacks and whites. Two Scavengersà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ describes four people held together for a moment at a red traffic light. Lawrence Ferlinghetti writes about the differences that he has observed in society. Both†¦show more content†¦This slows the poem down and gives the reader time to appreciate each idea. The unusual layout of the poem suggests that it follows the poets thought processes as he observes the scene before him. The details build up gradually and are somewhat reminiscent of stream of consciousness narrative. The poem is divided into three sections. The first sets the scene (lines 1 - 9), the second adds detail (lines 10 - 30) and the final section reflects on what this tells the poet about society as a whole. The whole of Nothings Changed has been written in present tense. Although he is recalling a past experience, it is as if the poet is re-living the experience as he writes. The language that is used highlights the impression that segregation still exists - words and phrases such as labouring, anger and mean make the reader engage with the poets emotions. His anger is described as hot, white, inwards turning / anger. Literary features used in the poem are alliteration, repetition and assonance. Comparison is done between the inn and the cafÃÆ' ©. The viewpoint in the poem is also carefully established. The first stanza, for example, puts the reader in the poets shoes. A first person account makes it more likely that the reader will see things from the poets point of view.
